At first glance, The Boroughs appears to be a peaceful retirement community tucked away in the New Mexico desert, a place where life moves a little slower and every day feels predictable. Bueneath the manicured landscapes and quiet streets lies a growing mystery that forces a group of residents to confront an impossible threat. Executive produced by Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers, the sci-fi mystery series blends suspense, supernatural intrigue, and heartfelt character drama as its unlikely heroes' race to uncover the truth before time itself is taken from them.
To help bring this deceptively ordinary world to life, SDFX Studios delivered 134 visual effects shots under the visual effects leadership of Production VFX Supervisor Tara DeMarco and SDFX Studios VFX Supervisor Yael Majors. Supporting the work were key department leads including Santosh Kumar Singh (VFX Comp Supervisor), Sanjay Singh (VFX Paint Supervisor), and Bhushan Bhavsar (VFX Tracking Supervisor).

One of the team's most significant contributions involved enhancing the show's environment. Through digital matte painting and compositing, artists transformed dry Albuquerque landscapes into vibrant, carefully maintained surroundings, helping reinforce the community's pristine appearance while subtly supporting the story's underlying sense of unease. The work extended beyond the backgrounds themselves, requiring window reflections and surrounding elements to be seamlessly integrated, so every enhancement felt naturally captured in-camera.
Another major focus was the series' extensive invisible effects work throughout the series This included spark enhancements, along with the removal of extensive rigs, wires, reflections, and on-set crew, requiring careful reconstruction of environments and practical details to ensure every frame looked cohesive and naturally photographed. Much of the challenge lay not in removing unwanted elements but recreating the details behind it in a way that left no sign the shot had ever been altered.

One of the standout sequences we worked on occurs during a neighborhood-wide power outage, when overloaded televisions suddenly fail and plunge the community into darkness when a character collapses. To heighten the impact of the moment, SDFX Studios introduced subtle spark effects and interactive enhancements while carefully preserving the realism of the scene, allowing the tension to build naturally without overpowering the storytelling.
The team also delivered detailed character refinement work, including digital hair and wig enhancements for Geena Davis. Artists reshaped the hairline, refined the widow's peak and removed visible wig artifacts to create a more seamless and natural appearance while maintaining continuity throughout the series.

Beyond these hero moments, SDFX Studios contributed crowd enhancements, seasonal environment transitions, background augmentations, and finishing support that helped elevate the visual consistency of the series from episode to episode.
With The Boroughs, SDFX Studios helped create a world where the most effective visual effects are the ones audiences never notice, supporting the mystery, enhancing realism, and allowing the story to remain at the forefront of every frame.
The Boroughs is now streaming only on Netflix.
