The Bad Guys 2

Bigger, Bolder, Badder : How SDFX Studios Took The Bad Guys 2 to New 3D Heights

DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys 2 brings everyone’s favourite reformed animal outlaws back for an even wilder ride. This time, the now-good Bad Guys find themselves hijacked into a globe-trotting, high-stakes heist they never saw coming, masterminded by a new crew of criminals they can’t outsmart: the Bad Girls. Based on the best-selling book series by Aaron Blabey, the sequel delivers fast-paced action, sharp humour, and outrageous new schemes, all made even more immersive by SDFX Studios’ dynamic 3D work.

With a sequel that amplifies both scale and spectacle, Jeremy Carroll worked as Stereographer to help bring a bold new dimension to The Bad Guys 2. Working with the SDFX team, he leaned into the film’s fast-paced, globe-spanning action. “The first film felt grounded, but the sequel goes big,” Carroll said. “The Bad Guys 2 is faster, funnier, and more over the top, which gave us more room to play with depth and scale without losing the emotional and comedic timing that make these characters pop.”

The film opens in the winding streets of Cairo, where tight alleyways, bustling markets, and a high-speed car chase immediately throw viewers into a fast paced, street level view of the action. “We really wanted the audience to feel like they were in the passenger seat with Wolf,” Carroll said. “3D gives us the tools to bring the action closer without overwhelming the viewer.”

The Bad Guys 2 expands its scope even further, taking viewers across the globe and beyond. In a standout set piece, the crew launches into outer space to pull off their most outrageous scheme yet: using a magnetized space cannon to suck all the gold from Earth into orbit. It is bold, enormous, and a stereoscopic dream. “You are framing Earth in the background, a space station in the foreground, and streams of gold flowing in between,” Carroll explains. “We wanted those scenes to feel vast, dimensional, and rich with detail without making everything look miniaturized.”

The film was a true collaboration between Carroll, the SDFX Studios team, and DreamWorks Animation’s David Yanover (Post Production Manager) and Kyle Pascucci (Digital Imaging Manager). “DreamWorks gives us the creative trust to craft a compelling 3D experience, but they are also deeply engaged during look development,” Carroll says. “We would share sample shots and get focused, thoughtful feedback on where to amplify depth and where to dial it back.”

One of Carroll’s favourite creative challenges was the Luchador wrestling match where audiences first meet Pigtail, a fiery new antihero voiced by Maria Bakalova. “That scene is big, bright, and wild,” he says. “We had long lenses sweeping through Z space, stretchy cartoon physics, and slapstick gags that 3D just amplifies.” In one moment, Pigtail even folds Snake into a balloon animal, bouncing right past the camera in exaggerated stereo.

Joining Pigtail are two other newcomers: Doom (voiced by Natasha Lyonne) and Kitty Cat (Danielle Brooks), the leader of the new “Bad Girls” crew. While their introductions are unique, SDFX treated them with the same stereo philosophy as the rest of the cast. Let the depth serve the story. “Whether it’s a car chase or a punchline, good 3D makes it land harder, not louder.”

Even the film’s quieter moments benefit from thoughtful 3D nuance. Carroll highlighted scenes where gentle depth cues and soft backgrounds subtly guide the viewer’s focus, bringing characters forward without pulling attention away. “It’s not just about spectacle,” he explained. “Good stereo draws you in emotionally. Especially for younger audiences, it creates that sense of really being there with the characters.”

With The Bad Guys 2, SDFX Studios shows why they remain leaders in immersive 3D storytelling. By blending playful artistry with sharp technical craft, they have turned a globe-spanning heist comedy into a stereo experience that feels bigger, bolder, and more fun than ever. “At the end of the day, we want audiences to feel like they are right there with the crew on their wildest adventure yet,” says Carroll.
